I would not be a very good eye-witness at a crime scene. If I was asked to describe a suspect, for example, I am very unlikely to have noticed key details like hair or eye colour, whether glasses were being worn, though I would notice anything unusual like an unexpected logo on their clothes. We are all wired differently.
However, as a young teacher, I discovered a had a pin-point talent for spotting rings on fingers. I was able to pick them out at great range, and could tune into slight movements in students’ arms that were tell-tall signs they were hiding their digits because they had spotted a teacher in range. Rings were banned, you see, and having responsibility for policing rule infringement must have had something to do with, temporarily at least, equipping me with this super-human talent.
So, what weight should I put on the fact that, wherever I have been today, I have been noticing ant hills. Every few yards. Have they suddenly appeared? I did notice some winged ants, so it could be. Or is there a message here? Work together harder, learn from the ant.
Well, it is certainly a worthwhile lesson, but it doesn’t bite.
Let me say this, though. It is to do with gifts. Like my temporary ability to spot rings, spiritual gifts are ‘temporary,’ they are despatched by the Holy Spirit because someone needs to hear a message, be healed, be comforted, and so on. If you give someone a message, that doesn’t mean you will now forever be God’s message giver. Look at the bigger picture. God is enabling his body to take care of its members. The giver and recipient are blessed. The giver of gifts, the Holy Spirit, enables God’s grace to flow. God likes to mix it up, to remind the members the gifts are His.
