What are these people doing? Notice the rapt attention, the rows of smiles, the sense of involvement in every pose?
Well, this is one of two places this morning where the Christmas story was told, carols sung, and generally we were reminded of the story of God sneaking into history, and sneaking into people’s lives, and so God being discovered right at the heart of things.
From where I was stood this was my view of the action.
I’m not sure which of the cast had the hiccups, but I could hear it clearly. Don’t know who dropped the baby on its head, but I found out later that that’s what the spontaneous laughter was about. I did, though, get to see the shepherd in action shepherding the sheep. I”m not sure if that was rehearsed, though, or someone simply inhabiting the part.
That’s the thing about Jesus, though. He isn’t a philosophy, or even a set of rules or teaching. He was something that happened, and happened for everyone. He can’t be force fed, but given the opportunity to hear what God has done through his actions, hearts can become strangely warmed, and where folks will receive him still, the dear Christ enters in.
