Our dog is a black and tan cocker spaniel, over a year old now. I call her Bagel, but she has other names too.
Living in Cleveleys she has, quite fortunately, got a love of beaches – or more accurately a love of seabirds. And running. Putting a coat on at home means, in her doggy understanding “Pet man is taking me to beach to run and chase seabirds. Time to get excited.”
Tide was quite high Saturday, not many birds, sea rough. We could see quite a flock of birds towards Fleetwood, circling like air-borne debris, just out from the shore.
Nearly time to go home, that quiet set of birds by the sea shore, all lined up and still, parallel to each other, caught Bagel’s eye. Off she ran, and the birds, in unison, gently took off, and floated like a spotted rug, waiting for Bagel to go away, so they could parachute back to their reverie. Simple and majestic.
The birds out to sea, and the birds just described, by their reactions, pointed to something that was going on below. Jesus used a similar picture when he said of his return words to the effect of “where you see the birds circling, you will know the body is not far away.”
They are using the same technique to find the God particle, the Higgs Boson. Causing collision events, and seeing what the ‘particle birds’ do as they take off from the action. The particle birds give away the event, and the scientists know what the repercussions of a Higgs Boson event should look like.
I don’t think a Bagel sea bird event is so characteristic, but given a research grant, I might be able to make a good start.
A God event – worship is one good example – likewise causes a spiritual flap and take-off for some, though not all, and not always in the same way. But God does touch lives, and if you could capture all the fragments of fall out, analyse them, you have good hard evidence for God. It’s often the reason people know there’s something there in the first place, and start looking. And finding is usually something of an inevitability from there.
(This blog’s got long…)
Scientists, we, those trying to be Atheists at least, conveniently ignore such evidence. It gets personal. Personal God not allowed. Even if He is objective and historical. And alive.
