As we warmed up for the hour of prayer this evening, we were discussing nicknames.
I could easily begin to recall the names by which we knew our school teachers – and why. Apt, creative and clever names. Claude, Click, Jumbo. Like yesterday’s blog, the ‘right’ names emerged.
But when put on the spot, I wasn’t sure what I was nicknamed as a teacher – probably something to do with the bow-tie I wore in those days as my trade-mark.
The book or Revelation is full of mysterious one-liners. There’s something huge going on in the narrative there, and our man John just gives us a few tasters, with angelic help. We are destined to be given a rock with our nickname in it. It’s something exciting to look forward to. I suspect it will be apt, creative and clever – and surprising.
God is at work in us, clothing the perishable with the imperishable. You have a new name that you will be known by. It is a name of love. God has both earned the right, and won our trust, to do precisely that.
