There is definitely a fascination with things disasters, accidents, and things that stop the everyday flow of life. And they are irrestible.
No surprise that the Highways Agency have just invested in lots of screens to set up on the motorway when there is an accident – to ensure the drivers on the other side can’t slow down to gaze. Though the sight of screens erected along the central reservation will be a distraction in itself.
Bit like Christmas.
There is a sense of festival. Of being caught up in something that is bigger than we are, and that affects everyone. That tells us we are not the masters of our destiny. And those that think they are somebody are no different to the rest of us.
We don’t like acknowledging our weaknesses, especially as nations, or on the scale of humanity. And yet it is such a relief to face that fact. But perhaps only when you have a sense that there is a loving God who is willing to underwrite and take responsibility for us. That is festival.
Enjoy the snow, though it might cause you problems.
