There will be some Bible verses which have a history for you. Whenever you read them, there is a story that you are reminded of, or a time when that verse held great significance. They can be a little bit like lifebelts that we are given to cling to when keeping head above water seems hard.
In my experience, people who are training for ministry (people at church involved in training, students I have supported) long to have a better grasp of scripture, an overview. It is one thing that is often coveted!
However, I think it is really important to know how much a scriptural truth can be relied upon. The experience of holding that lifebelt is, in my opinion, worth as least as much as reading a hundred books about the verse. You are then able, with authority and experience, to show someone else how trustworthy it is.
God’s truth, as revealed in scripture, is how the world is, and what it is becoming.
One day the glory of the Lord shall fill the world, as the waters cover the seas.
Then we shall simply tread water.
