Weddings, baptisms and funerals are an integral part of my job, though their frequency is quite varied. About eight funerals a month at the moment, with one baptism, weddings a rare occurrence.
I’m not an expert at what goes on in any of them – I’m only a specific part of them. They are all unique, and the focus not really on me, but I am responsible for keeping that focus.
We did have a renewal of vows ceremony yesterday – but it kind of combined all three. It was a family I had done a funeral for, and there was a baptism after the renewal. A first for me.
The thing to note was the courage of the family in wanting to do this renewal of vows, and taking the steps to make it happen. And the baptism of their son was, to everyone, an integral part of the whole.
It was a good service. Not because I did it particularly well, but I think the story was clear, the service conveyed it, the vows were real and gritty, and there was an honouring of the reality of Jesus in the midst.
It was a blog we all took part in, and will remember.
I think this morning’s worship services also fit that description.
Thanks is to God!
