Thank you to all the expected and unexpected insights into motherhood we were offered yesterday. Mary got a few mentions – how she was there at the cross, when disciples and others weren’t.
I guess she’d moved a long way from that time when the family were seriously worried about his mental health because he was in such demand that they couldn’t get near him. He hadn’t sounded very sympathetic at the time – in fact his comment that the people around him were his mothers and brothers seemed cruel.
There weren’t many of them there at the cross.
Those who were there were prepared to die with him. They’d thrown their lot in.
And none of them, is spite of the many spoiler alerts, were expecting the resurrection.
That this was part of the process of brand new birth in the Spirit. Even to those who’d bottled it.
Spectator, bottler or reckless pursuer of Jesus, becoming a follower brings you into his family. No tame ride, though, you have to live with the fact that he is King and Lord of all creation.
But don’t let that put you off.
