I remember being fascinated by a science article read in an Asimov book I borrowed from the library. I still remember it today – and was reminded of it while walking by the sea and thinking about tides.
Isaac Asimov talked about tug-of-war ratios. The moon is attracted by the Earth and by the Sun. Which is the biggest influence? Well, it is quite easy to work it out. It turns out the Sun has more gravitational influence on the Moon than the planet Earth does. Who’d have thought it!
It means that we are actually a double planet. Rather unusual. Another of those unique coincidences that make life possible.
Now you know something that most people don’t.
I was delighted, after all these years, to find that he is still known for this article! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tug_of_war_(astronomy)
What is your main ‘gravitational’ influence? And what does that make you?
