Just been eavesdropping into a discussion on keys on Facebook. Not the simple keys that open up locks, but musical keys, that, among other things, tell you which white notes to play as black notes. (Well, that’s what I always thought the key was far – an indicator of ‘difficulty to play!’)
I now know you can play a song in any key, and learnt how to transcribe a piece of music to play in Bb or Eb. I also think keys have a certain character, though there may be no musical basis to this. It might be why folk songs tend to be written in G or D.
Anyway, I digress. The discussion was about key changes to make songs more singable – changing the key means you are singing it lower or higher. This makes it easier or harder, depending on where you find singing most comfortable. What is the best male key, what is the best female key, etc.
Here’s the question I want to ask you to ponder. If a song being in the right key for you enables you to sing it effectively, with ease and joy, what is the right key to enable you to live your life with ease and joy? What would need re-tuning or shifting?
It probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind, and the actual answer may surprise you.
But please ask. And changing the key is not actually difficult, once you realise it is an option.
Abundant life. What would unlock it for you?
