I used to have a badge that I wore from time to time. It said quite simply ‘New Life in Jesus.’ It wasn’t sophisticated, so it looked like a piece of jewellery, but was bold and blunt. At that time, the phrase itself was unusual, in the sense it hadn’t been done to death as a catchphrase. I wore it because, as had been the case for me, I thought others needed to know there is something unexpected and utterly transforming to be found by encountering this figure shrouded in religion.
I guess for some it might read ‘turn over a new leaf’ or to others ‘try religion’ or simply ‘this guy wears weird badges, feel sorry for him.’
The phrase does reduce to a headline a very deep reality – that this person Jesus is able to source you with a life which is so impossible to imagine in nature, the best we can do is say it is new.
It is not as crude as a badge, but it is designed to be visible. You have been told not to hide it under a bucket. Remember that!
