About 70 people enjoyed singing hymns in church this evening. They all mean different things to each, and I’m sure individual emotions and connections were made as all, in the same room, joined in the shared harmonies. Marjorie’s idea and vision shared and fulfilled.
People sometimes say to me, at the end of a service, that they were able to ‘worship.’ For some this means they sang a hymn that connects them to God; for another it means there was clear teaching; for someone else passionate and clear prayer; the list could go on.
What is it that I look for, that makes ‘worship’ come home for me?
I’m hard to pin down, and I guess hard to please in this department. What I look for, and look to give opportunity for, is for encounter with God. I’m open to all kinds of means, but I want to see ‘the penny drop’ in people, and for them to react, say something, change, be surprised. Encounter God. When SHH I am happy. Might not be my thing, I might not really understand what is going on, but SHH.
It is simply when Something is Happening Here. And by something I mean God is at work, Holy Spirit is working, and something beautiful, holy and gracious is happening.
Might be as simple as a smile, as complicated as physical healing, or a word heard and wisdom received.
It’s not really a very useful template from which to build a church, but it a good ‘spirit level’ to check what is in place is OK, and how it might need adjusting.
Please encourage SHH, and give thanks when you see SHH, and let it continue.
