“You know, the guy with the beard and glasses…”
Well, that’s never that much use to me. I don’t notice those features. Don’t ask me what colour eyes somebody has got – I couldn’t tell you. It doesn’t register with me.
It could because I’m left-handed, or male, or even a Slav. Who knows.
I may be able to learn to recognise these kind of things, but it has eluded me so far without great difficulties.
Some people do not recognise physical features at all. I’m told there is a part of the brain that is responsible for these processes, and if that area doesn’t work, neither does facial recognition. I’ve worked as a visiting teacher in schools where kids with these difficulties, usually with many others as well, learn.
One solution is for such a child to recognise their teacher from the shoes they wear. Shoe recognition, particularly if a distinctive colour, isn’t the same problem – isn’t the same area of the brain. Of course, the teacher would need to wear the same shoes.
So what are the distinctive features that God recognises you by? What does he choose to focus on?
Perhaps the first thing that came to mind was your faults. Or if not that, was it something negative? WRONG!
Maybe it was your achievements, and your gifts that came to mind. WRONG!
I think, and you can shout WRONG if you like, but I would say it’s your ability to love. We all have it, but it is rather dormant unless the Holy Spirit opens us up. And you can’t fake love – not the Holy Spirit type.
This is how all people will know you are mine, said Jesus, because you love one another.
I rest my case.
But the implications of this are…
