I have two gripes about the use of the word awesome.
The first one is trivial. It’s the objection that it isn’t English. Our correct word is aweful (not awful). It is what you use to describe something that inspires awe; and awe is something that happens when your senses are assailed and you are transported somewhere quite unexpectedly by the beauty of power of what you encounter.
The second is about the devaluing of the word. It is God, really, who has claims on awefulness. He is Spirit, and an encounter with Him is inevitable supernatural. If you use the word to simply refer to something you think is wonderful, or simply something you like, or even something you approve of because you think you should, then that is awful.
There should be words that we reserve as holy for holy things.
