I have lines to learn. Lines for the Holiday Club Drama. Every time we have run a holiday club, we have seen characters created that still live on in the imaginations of people who have come.
Characters like Mr Bond and Mr Bean, though Dr Potty and Mr Tagliatelle have a long way to go before they become that universally recognisable.
I had to learn lines for last Thursday at Warren Manor. I knew them all (I can still remember them from the best part of 20 years ago when young people from the Christian Union at the school I taught at performed them). However, I hadn’t learned them in the right order, but the quality cast and narrator carried me.
Funny word ‘lines.’ Mean lots of things, but in drama it does mean the string of words that link one part of the story to the next part. Some lines are really memorable, because they do a good job of holding a lot of the story. Some lines are multi-dimensional, for example they have been borrowed from another film or drama, or the Bible, and so link effectively to other stories.
Jesus is a line in this way. He is the link in God’s story of reversing the demise of the world. He is the line the story was building up to, and the line the story comes from. And he is the line our own lives lead up to, and start afresh from.
