Which headline sums up the budget for you?
I must admit, I haven’t listened to the budget, nor have I read any in depth material on it. Neither, I suspect, have many people. The headline writers, however, should have read it all, and their headlines should capture the gist (there’s that word again) faithfully. I say ‘should.’
So, choose the correct headline, and you can then wisely discuss the budget as if it something you have analysed and can comprehend better than most.
At one time we would rely on ‘our’ newspaper to give us a steer, or our political party. I’m not sure we have those trusts and loyalties any more.
I want to shift now, and ask you to think about prayer in the same way. What is your headline in prayer? What is is that always comes across because it is part of your praying DNA?
For example, do you pray to the Father? or to God? or Jesus? I know they are the same, but they reveal something of the character of God you know in prayer.
This what I finally want you to think about. Do you tell Jesus you love him? It might seem trivial, but our lives are changed, and they should reflect our love for Jesus. Our conversation should feature his name. There is power in that name – power to save & power to offend. To some a fragrance, to others an offensive stench.
Your ‘headline’ will change, to speaking love to Jesus, which is to be done in a robust, realistic way (i.e. not romantic!) is our faithful witness.
