The Bible does not paint a heroic picture of Abraham, even though you could say he is the man who brought God back into the picture. He listened to God, and ‘foolishly’ trusted him, so God got his ‘friend.’
And God respected Abraham, tolerated his shifty dealings, even allowed Abraham to change God’s mind by appealing to his care for those who respect him.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying loving Abraham made got soft. But just that he allowed us to see his ‘vulnerable’ side. And he did it without losing face or respect.
If you think I’m stretching it a bit far there, don’t forget God chose to let himself be hung on a cross. He did that also without any loss of real dignity, though we only see that in retrospect.
God has this fault. He loves his creatures. It turned out to be a fatal fault, through which he gives us life.
Don’t you just love him.
