You probably have never had anyone describe Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM) to you in a way that conveys its beauty, it’s central place in physics as a science (and physics the science the others revolve around), and allowed you to look amazed at the universe from this perspective.
It’s unlikely that I will do any different, but I did promise, so here goes. It starts like this.
Everything has a natural frequency, a speed at which it likes to tick, backwards and forwards, like a child on a swing in a park. If two objects are linked, like a swing-swinging parent and a seated-in-swing being-swung child, then they will transfer energy. If the parent is able to transfer energy at the same natural frequency as that of the swing, the swing will travel very well, and the parent will not have to try too hard. Simples!
Here’s the wind swinging a bridge at the same frequency the bridge likes to swing at!
Normally, that doesn’t happen, because the bridge designer makes sure that the natural frequency is not one matches possible winds! Soldiers once destroyed a bridge by stomping over it at it’s natural frequency. Oops! Since then, they have had a habit of breaking their marching steps as they cross bridges.
The bridge can also be designed with some ‘damping’ mechanism to stop the vibrations becoming destructive. Keeping things manageable.
With me so far? Basically, things work best when in tune, though without damping, this can go too far. Think about a glass being shattered by the ‘right’ note.
Faith in Jesus changes you, places you on God’s wavelength, you are tuned in, not the same any more. If you take away things that dampen you, the Holy Spirit will have a more and more pronounced effect. Which you need to get more and more used to.
Too much, uncontrolled, and it can be unconstructive. But the Holy Spirit is always reaching out. To individuals and churches. It takes a bit more time/care/effort to get a church in tune, but, make no mistakes, boy-oh-boy, what harmony!
Just watch that church vibrate…
Why ever not… it is what we have been designed for.
