When a song I am listening to in the car literally strikes a chord, I tend to reach for
the volume and start to turn it up. I don’t know why. Playing it louder doesn’t really make it any clearer, but I guess it does cut out the background sounds better.
Maybe it’s because, sub-consciously at least, I want other people to hear it, and get excited about it. Is that why people in little customised cars BOOM their music for us to enjoy?
More likely it’s because I want to hear the words more clearly, but the volume control makes everything louder, not just the voice. The Treble might be more use for that.
When I was still working as a Sensory Impairment Support Teacher, Digital Hearing Aids started to be used. Though hearing aids are tuned to amplify different frequencies by different amounts, to enable efficient hearing specifically tailored for the individual, they do simply boost the sound that is there. Digital Aids are different. They literally change the sound, not just amplify it, to make the speech stand out more clearly. I think they take some getting used to, but are worth it (unless you are trying to listen to music!)
Is there a God Hearing Aid? Something that makes what God is saying stand out more clearly. A knob you can turn that makes all other sounds and voices fade out into the background?
Be Still. Sometimes it’s a shock that stills you, sometimes it is a distraction that takes you away from the noise, sometimes it is a hug. Then it is remaining still, and choosing to do that. Sometimes God imposes stillness, and though you struggle, the stillness keeps you in its grip.
You need to find your own Be Still button, or think back and realise what it is. You may have several. Probably the most common is to Sit and open the Book.
