I remember going along to see a theatre company called Riding Lights perform the whole of John’s Gospel at the RNCM in Manchester. It was brilliantly done, with lots of little touches. I remember one of the actors hilariously pretending there was a fly crawling up his arm. No, that isn’t specifically in John’s Gospel, but those incidental things reminded you these were real people in the account. And the genius of it was that you were transfixed by the story. They brought the scripture to life, and it was so lovingly rendered true to the text.
I remember leading a Christian Union meeting the day after at lunchtime at school. My colleague Peter said to me ‘God wasn’t speaking today – he was shouting.’ He meant His presence was very strong. We both knew why. We were still in the thrall of having the gospel in our consciousness. Still full of what we had received.
I don’t know what brings scripture to life for you. What opens you up to spirit-filling. But don’t neglect it. Ask, and you will receive.
