I’m told that the way diets really work is that they persuade your body to use up its emergency energy supply – since that is what the ‘fat’ is. It is not there by accident, but for just this eventuality.
We have this phrase ‘go the extra mile.’ Its a command Jesus made, asking us to respond in that way when such opportunities arise. It’s an opportunity to use the emergency supply.
We all have different strengths and weaknesses. Some things come so naturally, others we tend to orchestrate to avoid. In ministry God does draw you into situations, and you can feel it happening, that you know it’s not where you would choose to go. You are going to have to use your emergency supply.
In a way it is using our savings, making us vulnerable, and taking us onto a road less travelled.
However, here’s the rub. You are all called into ministry. All Christians are. And did you know that the emergency supply is the Holy Spirit. And God wants us to learn to rely on Him.
So, how about that as a diet for Lent? Ask God to lead you to do a compassionate deed every day. Speak kindly to someone. Invite them for coffee. Offer to pray with them. Offer help to a neighbour. Accept help offered. Speak and live Jesus.
