Just thinking this morning how the things I remember most from the eminent preachers we students managed to lure to speak to us at Leicester University were there comments made in ‘extra time.’ The little asides they put in unexectedly, the half-baked thoughts. Real gems. One guy came, and told us he had been prompted to side-line all he had prepared – it was all in extra time – great edge-of-the-seat stuff. I still draw on that teaching!
(Lot of hyphens in this so far!)
After of one of my first sermons preached I received a letter. It had had a profound impact. Was it my masterful grasp of theology? My compassionate delivery? My youthful enthusiasm. No. It was a throw-away, unplanned comment. I made the simple observation that everyone in the church is equally important, referring to the pictures of the PCC in the noticeboard.
How often on my day off have I made the most important observations, or drawing together of threads! Saturday is, in quite important ways, my sabbath. We all need sabbath recreational rest.
This doesn’t replace the need for study, reading, thinking, working. But it does remind you to always leave space to breathe. Islamic art always contains a fault to flag up the fact that only God is perfect. It is only the Holy Spirit, the breath of God, that gives life.
